＜はじめに＞
皆さんこんにちは。インド担当の久保木です。
今回はインド人の特徴を論じるときによく出てくるキーワードの「Jugaad」をテーマに記事を書いてもらいました。このJugaadという言葉の意味、考え方を理解することは彼らと一緒に仕事をする上で非常に重要だと言われています。今回も最後までお読み頂けますと幸いです。
<ジュガート>
「必要は発明の母」という言葉がありますが「Jugaad」も同様に発明の母と言えます。Jugaadはヒンディー語で、何か間違えていることを修正したり、新しいことを発明したりする「Hacks」という意味の言葉です。このJugaadは、限られた資源を使って即興で効率的な解決策を考え、経済的な制約を克服する、知恵と知識が必要な技術です。
私の住んでいるインドでは、「JUGAAD」は多くの家庭で日常生活の一部となっています。JUGAADとは、即席で考えた手作りの解決策であり、いろいろな事に代用できるものだと言えます。インドは、少ない資源とコストで仕事をこなす方法を知っている、才能ある人々の宝庫です。私は子供の頃から、たくさんのJUGAADSに出会ってきました。お金を節約するためなら、JUGAADは誰にとっても当たり前のことなのです。私たちの周りを見てみるとJUGAADに囲まれています。買うのではなく、家にある手持ちの資源を駆使して代わりになるなもの作ることができるのです。この人形は、私の子供のために私が作ったものです。
私は、物が少なかった子供の頃、Jugaadを通してどのように対処していたかを覚えています。例えば、白い靴が汚れてしまった時に、白い靴墨が手に入らなかったら、白いチョークを濡らして白い靴墨の代わりに使いました。また、絵筆がないときは、指や綿で絵を描いたり、停電のときは、熱したナベやフライパンで制服にアイロンをかけたり、数えればきりがないほどです。
JUGAADはどこにでもありますが、私はJUGAADを通してどのように環境を守ることができるのかに興味があります。JUGAADは私たちの環境に恩恵を与えてくれていると感じています。
私たちには知恵を使って、有意義な方法で物を再利用し、環境を守ることができる機会がたくさんあります。私はアート＆クラフトに興味があり、物を無駄にしない習慣があります。この2つの組み合わせが、JUGAADを行うためのアイデアをたくさん与えてくれ、新しい物を作り出すことにつながっています。古新聞や布を利用して、バスケットやイヤリング、バッグ、子供用のおもちゃなどを作っていました。古いペットボトルやココナッツの殻を使って、植木鉢やペン立て、写真立てなど、便利なものを作りました。古くなった葉っぱは、さまざまな工芸品を作ったり、堆肥に使ったりしています。
インドでは、JUGAADを使ったビジネスが数多くあります。インドのJUGAADについて調べてみると、たくさんの面白い画像や革新的な画像を見ることができます。ここで少しJUGAADのコンセプトを受け継ぐ有名な洋服のブランド「Doodlage」について触れたいと思います。「Doodlage」は、毎年トン単位で発生している生地の廃棄物をJUGAADによって削減することをコンセプトとしています。私はそのコンセプトが気に入っています。。
Jugaadはインド人の日常にあふれているのですが、ある日、バスに乗っていると、私の村の近くでこんな光景に出くわしました。
この大きなショベルカーがガス欠で立ち往生していました。動かない為ガソリンスタンドに行くこともできません。そんな中で”Jugaad”が発揮されました。この大きな車両に燃料を充填するために、ショベルカーは自らのシャベルで燃料の入った大きな缶を持ち上げ、パイプを伝って燃料を上から落とすという、ポンプを必要としない創造的な方法を考えだしたのです。見た目は滑稽で、危険も伴う。しかし、彼らはこの大きな車両に燃料を充填することに成功したのです。もちろん、事前に燃料について計画し、確認することができていたなら、このような事態は起こらなかったのですが…
日々の生活の中で、JUGAADは即効性のある解決策を与えてくれますが、それは必ずしも長続きするものではありませんね。だから、時にはそのようなJUGAADを避けるために、きちんと計画を立てる必要があるのです。しかし、JUGAADから新しいものを発明するというコンセプトは、人間にとっても、環境にとっても、常に素晴らしいアイデアなのです。

如何でしたでしょうか。このインド人のこの考え方は、スピーディーで変化が激しい現代において、新しいアイデア、ビジネスを生み出す「発明の母」として評価されていますが、環境問題にも貢献するものだったのですね。そういうとらえ方もあるというのは非常に興味深いです。今後もインドの理解の一助となる内容をアップしていきますので、引き続きどうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

Jugaad
As we say necessity is the mother of invention, and JUGAAD is the same. Jugaad is a common Hindi word, the meaning of this word is ‘Hacks” to fix something wrong or inventing of something new. Jugaad is the art of overcoming financial constraints by improvising an efficient solution using limited resources. Jugaad is something that needs your brain and knowledge of fitting which thing where.
If I will think about my country India, “JUGAAD” is a part of daily life for many families, jugaad can be described as an improvised, homemade solution that can substitute pretty much anything. India is a pool of talented people who knows how to do work with lesser resources & cost. From my childhood, I have come across many JUGAADS. When it comes to saving money JUGAAD comes naturally to all of us. If we will see around us, we are surrounded by JUGAADS.Instead of buying, we can create from the resources available in the house.This doll is made by me for one of the projects of my child.
I remember my childhood when things were scarce and that time how I was managing through Jugaad. Let me tell you a few examples, like, when my white shoes became dirty & no availability of white shoe polish, at that time I used white wet chalks. If a paintbrush was not there so, I used my fingers or cotton for painting, when there were power cuts, I was using a hot cooker or pan to iron my uniform and so many incidences are there to tell. JUGAAD is everywhere but I am more interested in how we can save our environment through JUGAAD. I feel JUGAAD has benefitted our environment.
There are lots of opportunities where we can use our brains to reuse things in a meaningful way and save the environment. My interest is in art & craft and the habit of not wasting things, these two combinations give me lots of ideas to do JUGAAD, which leads to creating new things. With the help of old newspapers and fabrics, I used to create baskets, earrings, bags, and toys for kids. By using old plastic bottles or coconut shells, I made flower pots, a pen-stand, photo frames, and other useful things. I use old leaves for creating different crafts and also for compost.
There are so many businesses are there which are running in India on JUGAAD. If you need to know about JUGAADs of India you can come across lots of funny images as well as lots of innovative ones. I would like to mention about one of the famous brands of cloth “Doodlage” which follows the concept of JUGAAD. I liked their concept of reducing fabric waste through JUGAAD, fabric waste is generated in tonnes every year.
We Indians want to do Jugaad most of the time, one day while catching the bus I came across this scene near my village and found what a JUGAAD this man has done. How creatively thought of filling the fuel in this big vehicle which got stuck. It looks funny as well as dangerous also.
I can say in our day-to-day life JUGAAD can give quick-fix solutions but that will not always be long-lasting. So sometimes we need to plan properly to avoid that kind of JUGAAD. But the concept of inventing something new from JUGAAD is always a great idea for people as well as for the environment.
